SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - It looked as if ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara (0-2-2) was going to record its first win of the season on Friday night as the Gauchos led visiting Davidson (2-0-2), 2-1, in the second half, but the Wildcats' goal in the 70th minute forced UCSB into its third overtime game of the season. After 110 minutes, the two teams settled for a 2-2 tie in front of a crowd of 2,728 at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.

The Wildcats took an early lead when Mark Millard's corner kick in the 12th minute found its way to the goal line and ricocheted off of a Gaucho defender, putting Davidson up 1-0.

UCSB did not trail for long though, as Sam Garza provided the equalizer in the 18th minute. Luis Silva played a beautiful through ball past two defenders to Garza who beat Davidson goalkeeper Chip Sanders with a shot to the far left side of the goal.

With the score locked at one apiece, the Gauchos continued to chip away at the Wildcat defense. Garza followed up with another shot that went just wide on the left side of then Danny Barrera took a shot that was deflected out of bounds by Sanders resulting in a Gaucho corner kick.

Garza took the corner for the Gauchos and his cross found Michael Tetteh on the left post. A Davidson defender blocked Tetteh's first shot, but he was able to collect the rebound and put it in the back of the net to give UCSB its first lead of the season.

Unfortunately, UCSB was unable to hold onto the advantage. With just 20 minutes left to play in regulation, Davidson's Alex Caskey took a free kick that the Gaucho defense was able to block, but Greg Macnamara got his head on the rebound and scored, knotting the game back up, 2-2.

The Gauchos and Wildcats each had opportunities to shut the door in the remaining 20 minutes, but Sanders and UCSB goalkeeper Sam Hayden both came up big, stopping a combined seven shots on goal, sending the game into overtime.

UCSB controlled possession throughout both overtime periods and out-shot the Wildcats 9-1 during extra time. The Gauchos had four corner kick opportunities in the first overtime, but were unable to capitalize on the set pieces.

In the second overtime period, Barrera looked as if he was going to capture the victory for the Gauchos on multiple occasions. Two of his five attempts just missed the goal, hitting the post, and Sanders and the Wildcat defense were able to stop another three shots by the junior to preserve the 2-2 tie.

""The chances came and there were quite a few of them," said head coach Tim Vom Steeg. "I am at a little bit of a loss because I certainly thought that tonight we did a lot of really good things. Once again, we have to go into the locker room and regroup.

"Garza worked and (Michael) Nonni worked. Danny (Barrera) played enough balls into them and Peter (McGlynn) was dangerous. But it was not meant to be."

Barrera led all players with seven shots during the game with four on-goal. Garza was not far behind, tallying six shots and three on-frame. In goal, Hayden tied his season-high of five saves. Sanders posted 10 saves for Davidson.

UCSB has out-shot its opposition in every one of its 2010 contests and Friday evening was no exception with the Gauchos leading the Wildcats 22-13.

UCSB will hit the road next week for its second trip of the season to New Mexico. This time around the Gauchos are slated to play in the Lobo Classic, taking on No. 6 Harvard on Friday, Sept. 17 and Buffalo on Sunday, Sept. 19.
