SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 9 UC Santa Barbara's season-opening struggles continued on Tuesday evening as the Gauchos fell 1-0 to visiting No. 24 Creighton at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. With the loss, UCSB falls to 0-2-1 on the season while the Bluejays improve to 3-0-0 with their third consecutive shutout victory.
The lone goal of the match came in the 37th minute when Creighton's Jose Gomez crossed the ball into the area on a corner kick from the right side of the field. The cross found Andrew Duran, who headed it high into the goal for his first goal of the season.
Prior to that point, UCSB had faced a few missed opportunities on its offensive end. Fifteen minutes into the game, Peter McGlynn fed a great cross to Sam Garza inside the box, but Garza was just a touch off of connecting for the shot as the ball went wide left and out of bounds.
In the 23rd minute, Josh Moran took a shot from 15 yards out that Gaucho goalkeeper Sam Hayden was able to scoop up. UCSB took advantage of the possession and Garza streaked down the field and took a shot from in the middle of the field 18 yards out, but Creighton goalie Brian Holt made the first of his three saves during the game.
UCSB's last opportunity in the first half came when Garza sent a cross to Danny Barrera in the 44th minute. Barrera headed the ball towards the goal from the middle of the area, 15 yards out, but Holt came up with the save to preserve the Creighton lead at halftime.
The Gauchos out-shot the Bluejays 5-1 in the second half, but only McGlynn was able to fire one on-frame during the half. In the 64th minute, Michael Tetteh got a good look when Luis Silva passed him the ball from the left side of the field on a free kick. Tetteh, who was 30 yards out in the dead center of the field, took a shot, but it went high and to the right.
"Its demoralizing as a team when you play well and you don't get rewarded with a goal and then you give up a goal, that's the recipe for losing a soccer game," said head coach Tim Vom Steeg.
For the third consecutive contest, the Gauchos outshot their opponents, this time 7-4. The teams were even with three shots apiece on frame.
"I always used to think you make your own luck, so we are definitely going to have to fight through this," Vom Steeg said. "We weren't dangerous enough in the second half. In the first half we definitely were.
"It's early, I guess that's the good news. One way or another, we have to look at each other and on Friday come out and fight again. I thought we played really hard, I thought we moved the ball around fairly well."
This marks the first time since Vom Steeg took the reigns of the program in 1999 that UCSB has failed to win one of its first three games of the season. The fact that the Gauchos' have already been shutout twice is uncharacteristic of the program, which was shutout just two times during the entire 2009 campaign.
UCSB will be back in action on Friday, Sept.10 as it remains home to host Davidson at 7 p.m. at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
Season tickets for the 2010 soccer season are still available. All season ticket packages include tickets for the 2010 Men's College Cup, which is being hosted by UCSB on Dec. 10-12 at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. Individual season tickets start at just $75 and include one ticket to all home men's and women's regular season games and one 2010 Men's College Cup all-session ticket. UCSB staff and faculty can purchase their season tickets for a reduced rate of $50.
