SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Senior forward Drew McAthy scored his second goal in as many matches and junior transfer Jonathan Davis scored his first as a Gaucho, to lead 13th-ranked UC Santa Barbara past Westmont College 2-0 on Saturday night in front of 1,028 at UCSB's Harder Stadium.
McAthy scored UCSB's first goal at the 5:10 mark. Senior defender Tony Lochhead hit a perfect corner kick and McAthy headed the ball past a leaping Logan Frank and into the upper left corner. The goal was the 37th of McAthy's career, and he is now alone in second-place on the Gauchos' all-time list.
UCSB made it 2-0 at 23:00. Jonathan Davis, a transfer from North Carolina took a feed from freshman defender Myles Davis about ten yards in front of the goal. Jonathan Davis lifted the ball past Frank for his first goal of the season.
The Gauchos and Warriors played the final 67:00 scoreless. UCSB finished with 13 shots, while Westmont had 11. Senior goalkeeper Danny Kennedy logged his second shutout of the season for the Gauchos. The shutout was Kennedy's 23rd, moving him into second-place on the school's all-time list.
Santa Barbara played the final 24:58 minutes a man down as sophomore defender Greg Curry received a red card at 65:02.
The victory was UCSB's fourth straight in the crosstown rivalry. In the last four matches between the schools, the Gauchos have posted three shutouts and outscored Westmont 10-2.
The win improves UCSB's record to a perfect 2-0 on the year. The Warriors drop to 2-1. The Gauchos return to action next weekend when they travel to Storrs, Conn., to take part in the UConn Huskie Classic. On Friday, September 10, UCSB will play 20th-ranked Seton Hall and then on Saturday, September 11, the Gauchos play UConn.
