Sept. 1, 2009
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team (1-0-0) officially opened the 2009 season Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over visiting Cal State Bakersfield (0-1-0) at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. As was the case in the Gauchos' only preseason exhibition game against Westmont on Aug. 22, freshman Michael Nonni led the team with two goals and senior Martin Hedevag put away one.
Unlike the exhibition against Westmont, the Gaucho offense struck early, scoring twice within the first 10 minutes of the game.
Hedevag's goal came first in the sixth minute. Sophomore Danny Barrera's corner kick reached sophomore Luis Silva, who proceeded to head the ball towards Nonni who headed the ball back towards Hedevag. The senior ensued with a header into the Bakersfield goal, putting the Gauchos on the scoreboard.
In the 10th minute, Silva displayed more stellar footwork, sending the ball to Barrera with a heel kick. Barrera then fed the ball to Nonni eight-yards out. Nonni got a good look and shot the ball to the far right corner of the goal, pushing the UCSB advantage to 2-0.
The Roadrunners cut the Gaucho lead to one goal in the 37th minute when Oscar Coppieters scored on a penalty kick, the only Bakersfield shot that was on-frame during the match.
The score remained 2-1 until the 88th minute when Nonni dribbled down the right sideline before cutting in front of the goal and beating the goalkeeper with a shot to far left side of the goal.
UCSB out-shot the Roadrunners 17-3 during the match with seven shots-on-goal. Senior David Walker, Nonni and freshman Machael David each led the team with four shots apiece. Three of Walker's were on-goal.
In the Gaucho goal, junior Sam Hayden earned the start and tallied one save. Bakersfield's Eric Shannon posted four saves.
With the win, UCSB improves to 2-0-0 in its all-time series against the Roadrunners. The two team's last meeting was in 1986.
The Gauchos will hit the road this weekend for the West Virginia University/Nike Classic in Morgantown, W. Va. UCSB will take-on the Mountaineers on Friday at 5 p.m. (PST) and Pittsburgh on Sunday at 8 a.m. Both games are available on Gametracker.
