Santa Barbara, Calif. - Junior Rob Friend, a transfer from Western Michigan, scored on a header off of a cross from senior Steven Sosa in the 70th minute to snap a 0-0 tie and give the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team a 1-0 lead over visiting University of Illlinois-Chicago on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Matt Bly replicated Friend's shot nine minutes later when he scored on a header off of cross from another freshman, Jon Apilado, giving the Gauchos their final goal in a 2-0 Kappa Kup victory. For both Friend and Bly it was their first goals of the season. Friend, however, assisted on a pair of goals in Friday's win over Long Island, and now has four points in the team's first two matches.

In improving to 2-0, UCSB limited the Flames to just three shots on goal. Freshman Dan Kennedy logged his second consecutive shutout, but needed just one save for the second contest in a row. Illinois-Chicago was outshot 13-3 by the Gauchos. In two wins, UCSB, led by defenders Tony Lochhead, Neil Jones, Galen Donaldson and Keving Maffris, has limited the opposition to just four shots on goal.

In the first game of the day, Long Island and Cal Poly tied 1-1.

UCSB returns to action on Thursday when they travel to San Diego State for a 4:00 p.m. match.
