UC Santa Barbara struck quickly and never looked back as the Gauchos rolled to a 5-3 victory over Michigan in their season opener at the Michigan State Classic.
Senior midfielder Dan Young scored 51 seconds into the match off of a cross from the right side from junior transfer David McGill to put the Gauchos up 1-0. Santa Barbara built a two-goal lead less than a minute later as midfielder Memo Arzate tallied his first goal as a Gaucho off an assist from Rob Friend.
Michiganıs Adam Bruh cut the Gaucho lead to one when he put a header past goalkeeper Danny Kennedy at the 15:58 mark. It was the first of two goals for Bruh on the day.
UCSB then rattled off three unanswered goals to go into the locker room at halftime with a 5-1 lead. Last years Big West scoring champion Rob Friend tallied his first goal of the season at 21:45 off of David McGillıs second assist of the game. Three minutes later Memo Arzate fed Dan Young for his second goal of the match and what would be the game winner. The Gaucho scoring was capped by an unassisted goal from Drew McAthy 16 seconds before the halftime horn sounded.
UM tallied two more goals in the second half to set the score at its final mark of 5-3 UCSB.
The Gauchos take on host Michigan State tomorrow, Monday, September 2nd at 10 a.m. pst. UCSB then returns to Santa Barbara for its home opener on Friday, September 6th when they host St. Maryıs at 6:00 p.m.
