Gauchos Explode Late for 3-1 Exhibition Win Over Westmont
Aug. 22, 2009
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team used a late offensive surge to defeat cross-town foe Westmont, 3-1, on Saturday evening at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. Freshman Michael Nonni scored twice, helping lead the Gauchos to the win during his first appearance in the blue and gold.
After a scoreless first half, Westmont was the first to get on the scoreboard 58:44 into the game when Ben Gordon connected on a cross from Daniel Guzman, which he shot to the far left corner of the Gaucho goal past a diving UCSB goalkeeper, Trond Helge Takset, to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage.
It took almost 14 minutes for the Gauchos to respond, but that response was an offensive onslaught of three goals in the final 17 minutes of the game.
In the 74th minute, a shot by David Walker was saved by Westmont goalie Matthew McNab. On the deflection, Nonni was able to make contact, kicking the ball into the wide open net to tie the game at one apiece.
Less than five minutes later, Nonni struck again when he scored on a header from a cross by Danny Barrera to give the Gauchos a one-goal advantage.
The final goal of the game came during the 85th minute when Martin Hedevag was able to get behind the Westmont defenders and beat the goalkeeper, sailing the ball to the far right corner of the net.
During the game, UCSB out-shot Westmont 21-7 with nine shots on frame versus the Warriors' four.
Nonni's two goals came on just three shots and Walker and Tetteh led the team with four shots apiece.
In goal, junior college transfer Sam Hayden got the start and shutout the Warriors throughout the first half, tallying one save. Takset played the second half and posted two saves for UCSB.
The Gauchos' regular season will get underway on Sept. 1 when they host Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m. at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
