Competing at the club level since the age of 10, Kaplan played with the nationally- recognized Irvine Strikers Soccer Club (ISC) of the Coast Soccer Premier League for five years prior to coming to UCSB...As a starting forward in 2005, he helped lead the squad to the first perfect season in the history of U-19 Premier League play...In 2003, he netted the golden goal in the finals of the Cal-South State Championships in the National Cup against PSG...ISC went on to win the Western Regional Championship and take third in the national finals that year before winning the Cal-South State title again in 2004...The squad's leading scorer, Kaplan guided ISC to a gold medal at the 2003 Manchester United/Nike Premier Cup U.S. Finals and to a 3-0-3 11th-place finish in the World Finals, which was the highest finish ever for an American team...The Strikers were also two-time Surf Cup and NHB Cup Champions and have captured numerous other elite tournament titles in the last five years.
Kaplan was a four-year starter at Villa Park High School, playing midfield and forward...Led the Spartans to three consecutive CIF-Southern Section Championship Series appearances from 2004-06...A three-time All-Century League selection, he tallied 42 goals and 32 assists in league play during his career at VPHS...As a sophomore, Kaplan led the team to the school's first league title in 18 years...The Spartans repeated as undefeated league champs his junior year...As a senior, he was elected the team captain, led the squad in scoring, and was awarded Offensive MVP after tying a school record with 20 goals scored...Was recognized by the Orange County Register as a scholar-athlete and named to the 2006 All-County Team...A four-year Principal's Honor Roll and Scholar-Athlete Award recipient, Kaplan was a member of the Student Senate for four years...Also ran track for four years and played baseball in 2003 for the Spartans.
