SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – What a difference a year makes. After Westmont upset UC Santa Barbara last season for the first time since 2000, the Gauchos bounced back in a big way with a 7-0 victory over the Warriors to reclaim the Bryant and Sons Cup at Harder Stadium on Saturday night.

In the 56th edition of the annual exhibition between the teams, UCSB dominated in every facet of the match to the tune of five first half goals, including four of which came in a span of five minutes.

Ignacio Tellechea got the scoring started in the 12th minute as the beneficiary of a beautiful set up from Noah Billingsley and Rodney Michael. After Billingsley crossed the ball to Michael near the end line on the right side, the sophomore Sierra Leone native sent the ball back to a cutting Tellechea, who was able to tap it in in front of the goal.

Michael found himself as the facilitator once again in the 27th minute, finding a roaming Axel Mendez, who proceeded to find the back of the net to give UCSB a 2-0 lead.

The Gauchos quickly made it 3-0 after a Warriors foul in the box led to a penalty kick that Thibault Candia (Nantes, France/Temple) converted with ease.

Just two minutes later, Candia would strike again. This time, it was freshman Carter Clemmensen (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Brophy Prep) who broke away from the defense and tapped the ball to the 5-foot-9 forward to make it 4-0 UCSB.

The Candia-Clemmensen connection was good for one more score as Candia dished to an open Clemmensen, who drove the ball to the right of the keeper and into the net.

In the blink of an eye, the Gauchos had pulled away 5-0 in just the 32nd minute of the match.

The second half featured two more goals from UCSB. None other than Candia tallied his second assist on the night, to go with his two goals, after finding Tellechea for his second goal of the match.

In the 82nd minute, Mateo Restrepo Mejia capped off the scoring on an assist from Oscar Ferreira (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos High School).

The Gauchos outshot Westmont 20-10 and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Ben Roach and Alan Carrillo split time in goal but were hardly threatened all night.

Mendez and Candia led the team with four shots apiece while Tellechea tallied three, all of which were on goal. Kavian Kashani tallied two shots while seven other Gauchos came up with at least one shot.

UCSB kicks off the regular season this Friday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Harder Stadium against St. John's (N.Y.). The match will serve as the second game of a doubleheader as the women's soccer team takes on Boise State at 5:30 p.m.

UCSB hosts the 2018 College Cup at Harder Stadium in December and season tickets as well as College Cup packages are on sale now and can be found online here or by calling the UCSB Athletics Ticket Office at 805-893-UCSB.
