SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The recruiting class for the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team continues to look better and better as more incoming freshmen reel in prestigious accolades around the country. On Tuesday afternoon, local Santa Barbara High School goalkeeper and UCSB commit Ben Roach was named to the United Soccer Coaches' 2017-18 High School All-American Team.
Roach, who was also named the CIF Southern Section Division I Player of the Year, is the only goalkeeper on the 20-player team, and one of three players from southern California.
The 6-foot-3, 170-pound keeper came through with multiple big saves in a 1-0 double overtime victory at Loyola in the CIF semifinals, and rejected three consecutive shots in a penalty-kick shootout to lead the Dons past Cathedral in the championship game.
Roach will give the Gauchos a formidable goalkeeping duo alongside returning All-Big West and All-Freshmen Team selection Alan Carrillo, who returns for his sophomore season.
UCSB hosts the 2018 College Cup at Harder Stadium in December. Season tickets as well as College Cup packages are on sale now and can be found online here or by calling the UCSB Athletics Ticket Office at 805-893-UCSB.
The Gauchos kick-off the season with its annual exhibition against Westmont on Saturday, Aug. 18 at 7:00 p.m. with the regular season opener slated for Friday, Aug. 24 at home against St. John's at 7:00 p.m.
