STORRS, Conn. – After going up 1-0 early in the second half of Sunday's contest against UConn, a cold, windy, rainy day in Connecticut got even gloomier for UC Santa Barbara when the Huskies scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to steal away a 2-1 win at Morrone Stadium.
Junior midfielder Drew Murphy put the Gauchos (2-2-1) up by a goal in the 58th minute via a penalty shot conversion, slotting low to the keeper's left while UConn (2-0-3) goalie Scott Levene guessed to his right.
That lone score looked like it would be enough, as UCSB did a good job at limiting dangerous chances to the Huskies offense, but an equalizer in the 84th minute pushed the momentum firmly in favor of the home team.
The equalizer came off a corner kick, with Kwame Awuah sending in a near post service. After UCSB failed to clear the pass, Abdou Thiam swooped in and pounced on the loose ball for the goal.
Awuah and Thiam paired up again in the 86th minute to put the Huskies up for good.
Streaking down the left side of the midfield, Awuah played a perfect pass to his right towards Thiam, who opened up and delivered a first-touch shot into the bottom-right corner of the net past UCSB keeper Vom Steeg.
Having wrapped up a season-long four game road trip, UCSB next returns to Harder Stadium to face the College of Charleston on Friday, Sept. 18.
