SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Besides having one of the most successful on-field seasons in program history, the UCSB men's soccer program thrived just as much in the classroom, laboratory, and lecture hall in the 2013-14 school year.
Headlining Gaucho Soccer's academic success was junior midfielder Adam Carn-Saferstein, who received the Golden Eagle Ring, awarded to the top male and female student-athletes (as measured by GPA) across all 20 of UCSB's intercollegiate programs.
Carn-Saferstein, an economics major, wrapped up his sophomore year with a cumulative GPA of 3.91.
The Ann Arbor, Mich. native was far from alone in his triumphs on campus. Earlier this year, the team was handed an NSCAA Team Academic Award, given annually to NCAA soccer teams with a team GPA above 3.0. It was the first time in program history that UCSB soccer received this award.
A total of 13 Gauchos finished last year with a cumulative GPA above 3.0 last year, including Carn-Saferstein, Duncan Backus, Fifi Baiden, Goffin Boyoko, Matt Glodack, Charlie Miller, and Peter Schmetz.
Of course, the conclusion of each school year spells the bittersweet end of the college careers for the senior class. Boyoko, a Paris native and global studies major, experienced this sensation last week as the sole Gaucho to participate in the SASH ceremony and Commencement Weekend. He will soon be joined among the post-graduate ranks by Peter Schmetz, Daniel Welsh, Achille Campion, and Glodack, who are all taking their final classes as Gauchos during Summer Session.
