SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – For the first time in program history, the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team was handed an NSCAA Team Academic Award, given annually to NCAA soccer teams with a team GPA above 3.0.

The award recognized the 2012-13 team, which finished the year with a 3.02 GPA for the academic year.

A total of 13 Gauchos finished last year with a cumulative GPA above 3.0 last year, including current players Duncan Backus, Fifi Baiden, Goffin Boyoko, Adam Carn-Saferstein, Mathew Glodack, Charlie Miller, and Peter Schmetz.

Carn-Saferstein, an economics major, and Glodack, a computer science major, finished with especially impressive averages of 3.87 and 3.54, respectively.

Carn-Saferstein was joined by former goalkeeper Andre Grandt, Boyoko, Baiden, and Boyoko at UCSB's 2013 "Brains and Bagels" breakfast, which honored Gauchos with a winter quarter GPA of 3.5 or higher and a cumulative GPA above 3.0.

This season was a success for the program both on and off the field, as the Gauchos went undefeated in Big West play for just the second time ever en route to their 11th postseason trip in the last 12 years.
