Soccer Adds Youth National Team Member, J.C. All-American
As promised, head coach Tim Vom Steeg and his staff delivered.
The two-time National Coach of the Year indicated that he would add to an already announced, highly talented 2013 recruiting class. Today, the team is excited to announce the addition of a German Youth National Team member and an attacking, forward-thinking midfielder to a deepening lineup.
Versatile defender Paul Ehmann will join the Gauchos has one of the most experienced International players to enter the program. A former member of the German U16 and U18 National Teams, Ehmann has competed for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the U19 Bundesliga – the premier youth league in Germany.
"Adding a player Paul's ability and maturity level to the program will not only pay immediate benefits next year but will be somebody that we can build around for the next 4 years," said Vom Steeg.
Ehmann, who plays defensive midfield and center back, was highly sought after by ACC and Pac 12 institutions as well.
Midfielder Gonzalo Gelso comes to UCSB from perennial national junior college powerhouse Barton CC in Great Bend, Kansas. Last season, the Argentinian born, Florida raised Gelso earned All-Conference, All-Region and All-American honors from his midfield position.
"Gonzalo brings a physicality and toughness to our midfield without sacrificing skill or possession," Vom Steeg says. "This is a rare combination and a component that we have been missing in the past couple of years out of our midfield play."
Gaucho fans should look for 2013 season tickets to go on sale in May. The full schedule has not been released yet, but home opponents will include Stanford and the always packed and competitive Blue Green rivalry game with Cal Poly.
