SPOKANE, Wash. - Ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara concluded action at the Gonzaga Nike Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over the host Bulldogs.
With the win, UCSB remains undefeated with a 2-0-1 record on the year. Gonzaga falls to 2-2-0.
Junior Daniel Welsh was named the tournament's Defensive MVP after helping lead the Gauchos to a 2-2 draw with Oregon State on Friday and to today's shutout, UCSB's first of the season.
Senior Nic Ryan scored his second goal of the season in the 31st minute of the match to give UCSB an advantage that it would never relinquish. Junior Dom Sarle started the play when the forward stole the ball off of a Gonzaga throw-in. He played the ball wide to senior Dion Acoff, who then crossed it into the box to Ryan. Ryan fired a shot from 18-yards out into the upper right corner of the goal to put UCSB up, 1-0.
With 23 seconds remaining in the first half, Gonzaga's Parker Victor rushed down the field and shot the ball from 10-yards out, but UCSB goalie Austin Mansker made a waist-high catch to keep the Gauchos ahead at the break. It was one of two saves Mansker had to make to seal his first career shutout.
Though Ryan's goal would stand up as the game-winner, the Gauchos piled on two more in the last 10 minutes of the match.
In the 80th minute, Achille Campion was awarded a penalty kick after he was tackled in the box. The junior went low with his shot and pushed the Gauchos up, 2-0, with his second goal of the season.
Then, in the 87th minute, freshman Ema Boateng crossed a free kick from the deep right side of the field to junior Goffin Boyoko, who put the ball away on the far right post for the third UCSB goal of the day, marking an early season-high for the team.
The Gauchos led the Bulldogs in shots, 17-10 and had a 9-2 advantage in shots-on-goal. Gonzaga goalkeeper Ryan Caballero made six stops during the match.
Acoff, Campion and Boateng led the way with four shots apiece in the win.
