SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara welcomed cross-town foe Westmont to Meredith Field at Harder Stadium on Saturday evening for the teams' 2012 edition of the Bryant and Sons Cup and the Gauchos came out on top for the 12th consecutive year as they posted a 3-0 victory over the Warriors in the season-opening exhibition.
The Gauchos controlled the tempo of the match, but despite out-shooting the Warriors 12-4 in the first stanza, the match remained scoreless until the 44th minute when senior Josue Madueno fed the ball to Boyoko, whose back was to the goal at the top of the box. The forward turned and shot the ball past diving Westmont goalkeeper, Matthew McNab.
Campion added his goal in the 70th minute when he sent the ball into the low near side of the goal from just outside the right post.
Just over six minutes later, the Gauchos brought their lead to three. Cesar Castillo misdirected his defender before tapping the ball to Boateng. The freshman passed the ball to Dom Sarle, who was just a few feet away at the top of the box. The junior forward quickly fired off an arching right-footed shot that deflected off the right post and into the goal.
For the match, UCSB out-shot the Warriors 20-4 and had a 9-1 advantage in shots on-goal.
Goalkeeper André Grandt needed just one save in the first half to secure the shutout. Austin Mansker made his debut in goal for the Gauchos during the second half. For the Warriors, McNab notched six saves, four of which came in the first stanza.
UCSB will officially open the 2012 season next Sunday, Aug. 26 at Loyola Marymount. The Gauchos will return home on Sept. 7 to host Valparaiso at 7:30 p.m. at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
