Opoku Called Up to Ghana U-23 National Team Camp

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara's David Opoku has been called up to train with the Ghana U-23 National Team and will attempt to earn a spot on the squad that plays Nigeria this weekend in the All Africa Games qualifier.

The forward, who will begin his sophomore season with the Gauchos in August, was called up to the national team camp two weeks ago and has been training with the team for the past week. He has already played in one contest with the team, which they won, 3-2, last Thursday. He will play his second game on Wednesday, June 22.
"I've been playing well," Opoku said. "The game is very different to that in the states, but it's been a good experience so far."
Opoku was the 2010 Big West Freshman of the Year after posting 17 points on the season (6 goals, 5 assists) during his rookie season, which was second on the team.
The 2011 men's soccer season will kick off on Aug. 20 when the Gauchos host cross town foe Westmont at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. The match is the first of 12 exciting home pairings on the 2011 slate, which also features match-ups with defending College Cup Champion Akron, the Big East's West Virginia and Villanova, and Blue-Green rival Cal Poly, just to name a few.
