Big West vs. Big East Showdowns On Tap in 2011
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Central Coast will serve as the battle ground for a showdown this fall between two of the nation's top soccer conferences: the Big West vs. the Big East. UCSB will host West Virginia and Villanova at Meredith Field as the Big East programs make the trek to the left coast to face the Gauchos and Cal Poly the weekend of Sept. 9-11.
The Big East is home to several of the best soccer programs in the country and last year, seven of its teams played in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, including West Virginia and College Cup Finalist Louisville. The Big West is one of the premier soccer conferences in the nation and has hosted six of the top-10 highest attended NCAA soccer games in history.
The last time UCSB had Big East teams on its schedule was in 2009 when the Gauchos faced West Virginia, Pitt and Rutgers, posting a 3-0 record during those contests. The Rutgers game (Sept. 11, 2009) marked the last time a Big East team took on the Gauchos on their home field. UCSB posted a convincing 4-0 win during the nationally televised Fox Soccer Channel match.
West Virginia and Villanova will visit UCSB on Sept. 9 and Sept. 11, respectively. The teams will travel to Cal Poly on the opposite days.
The 2011 men's soccer season will kick off on Aug. 20 when the Gauchos host cross town foe Westmont at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. The match is the first of 12 exciting home pairings on the 2011 slate.
