Greg Curry Returns To UCSB As Assistant Coach
"We are excited to be able to bring back an alum who is very familiar with the expectations and tradition of the program," said Vom Steeg. "His familiarity with my coaching style and knowledge of the type of player we want in the program will make this a very easy transition for the players and the coaching staff."
Curry recently completed his third season at Sacramento State where he helped guide the Hornets to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances - their first NCAA appearances in school history. His efforts in building the Hornet program helped result in Sac State recently being added as an associate member to the Big West Conference beginning in 2012.
"As a player, Greg was known for his tenacity and incredible will to win," added Vom Steeg. "His leadership on and off of the field were key components to our success and have made him into the coach that he is today." Following his playing career at UCSB, Curry was a third-round draft pick by the San Jose Earthquakes. He retired from professional soccer in 2008 before beginning his coaching career.
Curry replaces Leo Chappel who accepted a position with Toronto FC of Major League Soccer. "This is great opportunity for him (Chappel) professionally to work in Major League Soccer," said Vom Steeg "I know it was difficult for him to leave because of the players we have returning and the relationship he has with the incoming class but at the same time these opportunities do not come around very often."
