Charlie Ortega Named Assistant Golf Coach At UC Santa Barbara
Charlie Ortega, the General Manager and Director of Golf at Santa Barbara's Sandpiper Golf Course, was named assistant golf coach at UC Santa Barbara.
"Charlie Ortega brings a great deal of talent and experience to the Gaucho program," said Lass. "He is a well established golf professional and we will all benefit from having him on the staff."
Ortega is a former UCSB player, having been a member of the Gauchos from 1975 through 1977. He played professional golf for three years following his experience at UCSB. In 1979 Ortega became a golf professional, beginning as an apprentice and ultimately becoming an official member of the PGA in 1984. He spent time at a number of facilities around the country until he worked his way up to the position of General Manager and Director of Golf at high-end daily fee, resort and private courses.
Prior to taking his current position at Sandpiper, Ortega was at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course in Portland, Oregon. While at Pumpkin Ridge, he was able to help land a pair of prestigious tournaments, the Ladies United States Open and the United States Golf Association Amateur Championship.
"I am really excited about the opportunity to work with Steve Lass," said Ortega. "This is an outstanding opportunity for me and I very much look forward to it."
A native of Oceanside, Ortega and his wife, Sherry, reside in Santa Barbara with their daughter Chelsea (7) and son Cole (5).
