Golfer Jeff Wood Selected 2001 Male Athlete Of The Year

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Senior golfer Jeff Wood, the 2001 Big West Golfer of the Year, has been selected the first-ever Male Athlete of the Year.

Wood recorded 395 votes, a solid 34.7% of the 1,139 cast. All-Region third baseman Dave Molidor was second with 166 votes, followed by All-Big West basketball player Mark Hull, who had 145. Skip Schumaker, an outfielder on UCSB's nationally-ranked baseball team, was fourth with 96 votes.

Wood had numerous highlights in 2000-01. Not only did he win the Big West Championship by shooting a 209, but he also recorded a victory at the Oregon Duck Invitational, shooting a 210 in horrible weather. In addition, at the year's first tournament, the Pacific Invitational, Wood shot a first-round 65, setting a course record at The Reserve Golf Club in Stockton.
