March 5, 2009

SANTA BARBARA- Calif. - Fresh off a ninth-place finish at last week's Braveheart Classic, the UC Santa Barbara golf team will travel to Fresno this weekend to compete in the Fresno State Lexus Classic at Belmont Country Club. The 6,503 yard track will play host to 20 teams and be divided into three rounds, two on Monday and one on Tuesday.

Through 21 rounds on the year, the Gauchos are averaging a 7th place overall finish and 290.62 strokes per round. Ten different Gauchos have contributed in tournament play throughout the season.

Junior Brian Hollenbeck leads the Gauchos, posting a 72.67 scoring average through 21 rounds. His three-day total of 227 earned him a tie for 42nd place last weekend. Hollenbeck remains the only Gaucho to play in every round this season.

Tyler Weir, who posted the lowest number for the Gauchos at the Braveheart Classic, looks to build on the momentum from his seventh place finish. Weir was able to follow a 76 in the first round with a 2-under 70 and an even-par 72 to close out the weekend.

The Gauchos aim to fill the shoes left by Matt Grush, who is currently healing from an injury. His 73 stroke-per-round average ranks second best on the team.

San Diego State has won the last two Fresno State Lexus Classics.

Belmont Country Club is relatively flat, however, it boasts tight fairways lined with trees that can make finding trouble for players easy. The signature second hole is a 110-yard Par 3, guarded by a litany of greenside bunkers and water.
