Gauchos Continue Spring Season, Look Forward to Braveheart Classic

Feb. 28, 2009

SANTA BARBARA- Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara golf team will compete in the Braveheart Classic Tournament at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif., Monday and Tuesday, March 1st and 2nd. The tournament is hosted by UC Riverside and will be 54 holes, 36 on the first day, and 18 on day two.

The Gauchos look to improve on their 13th place finish in last weekend's John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii. The team's three-day total of 874 marked their second-highest total of the year. Santa Barbara currently boasts a team average 289.22 per round.

Matt Grush, who shot a 2-over 218 to lead UCSB, will miss this weekend's Braveheart Classic due to injury. Starting in his place will be Tyler Sterk, who's three-day total of 219 earned a tie for 53rd place.

Brian Hollenbeck leads the Gauchos with a 72.17 scoring average on the season through 18 rounds. Freshman Aaron Sherry is second best, posting a 72.22 mark through nine rounds.

It will mark only the second tournament of the season for Andrew Gunson. A 219 by the Scotland-native proved good enough to keep him in coach Steve Lass's top five.

Tyler Weir will round out the Gaucho line-up, earning his first playing opportunity in the 2009 Spring season. Weir posted a 73.40 scoring average through 15 rounds in the fall campaign.

The 18-team tournament will include West Coast foes Arizona, Cal Poly, Northridge, Long Beach Sate, Loyola Marymount, Oregon, Sacramento State, UC Riverside, and Utah State. Arizona finished third at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii.

The Gauchos will travel the next weekend to Belmont Country Club in Fresno to compete in the Fresno State Lexus Classic, March 9th and 10th.
