SEASIDE, Calif. -
The UC Santa Barbara golf team struggled to a 15th-place finish at the St. Mary's Invitational, which wrapped-up on Tuesday. The Gauchos were hamstrung by injuries and players who were required to take midterms.
UCSB, which shot a +58 score of 922, finished five shots behind Loyola University of Maryland, which carded a 53-over par 917 in the tournament at Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.
The Gauchos top finisher was freshman Paul Otte, a native of Santa Fe, N.M., who actually graduated from Westlake HS in Austin, Texas. Otte shot a 12-over par 228 and tied for 48th-place in the 82-player field.
The remainder of the Santa Barbara contingent had its struggles. Andrew Gunson and freshman Matthew Jun each finished 17-over par and in 66th-place. Veterans Chris Rendler and Scott Lewis were 19 and 21-over par respectively and finished in 73rd and 76th-place.
UCSB returns to the course in February when the spring season tees-off. The Gauchos will play in the Anteater Invitational hosted by UC Irvine at the Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach beginning on February 8, 2011.
