Gauchos Take Fourth at Bill Cullum Invitational

Oct. 27, 2009

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - UCSB shot a 1-over par 865 to finish fourth at the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Course in Simi Valley, Calif. The Gauchos were led by Tyler Weir who tied for seventh with a 3-under par 213, and while it was the team's second straight top-five finish, head coach Steve Lass was not completely pleased.

"This is one of the most talented teams I've had in years," said Lass. "But it has a long way to go to play at the level that it is capable of.

"Today, we had a poor finish and a poor finish, and while fourth-place is a decent finish, it is not as good as we could be," he said. The Big West Conference is very good this year and we need to get better and I know we can."

Lass was pleased with two things: the seventh-place finish by Weir and the solid performance of freshman Glen Scher.

"Tyler (Weir) had a good tournament and a seventh-place finish proves that," Lass said. "Also our freshman - Glen Scher - looked very good, particularly today when he shot a 69."

Scher's 3-under 69 gave him a 1-over par 217, allowing him to tie for 22nd, along with teammate Andrew Gunson.

Rounding out the Gaucho finishers were Russell Boring, who finished at 6-over par 222 while tying for 35th, and Brian Hollenbeck, who shot a 9-over par 225 and tied for 50th.

Pacific won the team championship with a tournament record score of 21-under par 843. The Tigers posted team rounds of 279-281-283 to best Saint Mary's previous team record 845 set in 2004. UC Riverside's blistering final round (-13) 275 vaulted the Highlanders into second place ahead of the host Cal State Northridge which finished at 863.

Pacific's Alex Johnson shot a 9-under par 207 to win individual honors, one shot ahead of Northridge's Nick Delio and Riverside's Kevin Fitzgerald who each shot 8-under par 208.

UCSB will play its final fall tournament on Nov. 9-10 when it travels to Pebble Beach, Calif., to compete in the Saint Mary's College Invitational.
