Junior Andrew Hoffer shot a one-under par 215, and finished tied for fifth, as the UC Santa Barbara golf team opened its 2001-02 season with a sixth-place finish at the Fresno Lexus Classic.
Hoffer was consistent from start to finish, shooting rounds of 71, 72, and 72. The 215 was the best score ever recorded by Hoffer as a Gaucho. Senior Greg Snider shot a 222, including a first round 70, to finish tied for 26th. Rounding out the UCSB field were Scott Linklater, who shot 224 and tied for 37th, J.R. Becko, who shot 225 and tied for 41st, Leigh Silver, who shot 223 to tie for 72nd, and Brian Six, who carded a 237 to tie for 86th.
The Gauchos actually led the tournament after one round with a 285, but final two round scores of 294 and 298 dropped them to their sixth-place finish out of 16 teams. The host school, Fresno State, shot an amazing 30-under par 834, to win the tournament by 40 shots over Stanford, Nevada, and Pacific, which each shot 874.
