Gauchos Finish Eighth At U.S. Intercollegiate, Takemoto Awaits Regional Bid

Palo Alto, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara golf team completed its regular season with a solid showing at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, finishing in a tie for eighth in the outstanding field.

The Gauchos shot a three-round score of 890, including a tournament-best 292 in the final round to make up a seven-shot difference and tie Santa Clara for the eighth spot. UCSB was paced by junior Jeff Wood who shot 221 and tied for 24th. Jeff Linklater shot 222, Naoya Takemoto shot 23, Gavin Owen shot 227 and Christian Helland shot 231 to round things out for the Gauchos.

Cal shot an 855 for the tournament to record the win, one-shot better than second-place Pepperdine.

While UCSB completed its regular season as a team, Takemoto, a senior, is in contention for an NCAA Regional bid. He was named First Team All-Big West for the second time this year and he finished the season as the Gaucho leader in stroke average (73.52). Takemoto won one tournament, The Countrywide Invitational at Wood Ranch, and he finished among the top-20 on six occasions. Takemoto shot a season-best 68 on two occasions, once each at the Real Del Mar Classic and at The Taylor Made Intercollegiate.
