Golf Closes Regular Season Strong, Finishes Second At BYU's Ben Hogan Classic

Provo, Utah - Junior Christian Helland carded second and third round scores of 68 and 69, to finish in a tie for third place with a four under par 212, leading UC Santa Barbara to a second-place finish at the Ben Hogan Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah.

For Helland, it was easily his best finish of the season. He overcame a first round score of 75 to accomplish the feat.

While Helland was a standout, he was not alone. On the strength of a final round 66, sophomore Scott Linklater shot a one under par 215, tying for ninth place. Senior Jeff Wood, UCSB's top golfer all year, shot two under over the final two rounds and tied for 19th place with a 218.

Andrew Hoffer shot a 220, tying for 25th, Leigh Silver checked in with 228 tying for 61st and Brian Six carded a 229 to tie for 68th, rounding out the Gaucho finishers.

As team UCSB's second-place finish was its best of the year. As a team they finished one over par, 17 shots back of the tournament champions, San Diego State. The Gauchos finished three shots ahead of third place Tulsa and four up on the host school, BYU.

The Gauchos will return to the links on April 31 and May 1, when the travel to the Big West Championships at the Serrano Country Club in Sacramento.
