In Final Tuneup for Big West Championships, UCSB Finishes Fifth at SMC/Merrill Lynch Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - In its final tuneup before the Big West Golf Championships, UC Santa Barbara finished in a tie for fifth with Cal Poly, out of 19 schools at the SMC/Merrill Lynch Invitational. The tourney was held in the rain at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Sophomore Ryan Keefe shot a 224 to finish in a tie for eighth-place, his best finish of the season. Junior Joe Ryon shot a 225 to tie for 11th-place.

Rounding out the Gaucho finishers, sophomore Marty Melcher shot 233 to finish tied for 44th, freshman Tony Verna finished tied for 49th at 234 and senior Greg Wells shot 245 to tie for 87th.

The tournament team title was won by Lamar, which shot 891 to edge Xavier by one shot. Fresno State's Jason Anthony and Lamar's Oliver Bekker tied for the individual title at 218.

UCSB's next action will be at the Big West Championships on April 24-25 at Tijeras Creek Golf Course in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.
