Gauchos Finish 11th in the Desert at Wyoming Cowboy Classic

SCOTTSDALE-Ariz. - Tyler Weir shot a 2-over 212 and Andrew Gunson fired a 2-under 68 in the final round, leading the Gauchos to an 11th place tie at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic presented by Cleveland Golf, at Talking Sticking GC in Scottsdale, Ariz.

After opening the tournament with a first round score of 295, the Gauchos improved each round. UCSB dropped seven strokes in round two and then carded a 5-over 285 in the final round to finish at 868, 28-over par.

All four Gauchos shot 4-over or below in the final two rounds.

UC Davis won the tournament by a whopping 16 strokes, shooting a 15-under 825. The closest opponent was Oregon State at 1-over 841. Texas-El Paso was third, one behind the Beavers.

UC Davis has won the last three Cowboy Classic events, 2007-2009. UC Davis shot a tournament record 825 (-15). The previous record of 829 was shot by UCLA in 2004. UC Davis' third round total of 267 (-13) is also a tournament record for low round shot by a team. The previous record was 268 by UCLA in the second round of the 2004 Cowboy Classic.

After two hole-in-ones yesterday, there was a third hole-in-one in today's round. That ace came from San Diego's Gunner Weibe on Hole #16.

Weir's solid performance was punctuated by1-under 69 in the second round, following an opening-round 72. A 71 polished off a solid week for the San Marcos, Calif. native, moving him into an 11th place tie for the weekend. This is the second consecutive tournament that Weir has finished with the lowest score for UCSB. He finished with 41 pars in the tournament, second best in the field.

His season average of 73.56 strokes per round is now lowest on the team, a spot most recently held by Brian Hollenbeck.

Hollenbeck has struggled of late, averaging over 76 strokes per rounds in his last two tournaments. He finished with a 12-over 222 for the tournament, shooting rounds of 74, 73, and 75 respectively.

Sophomore Andrew Gunson has been performing well of late for UCSB, tying for 44th in the Cowboy Classic with a 7-over 217. After shooting rounds of 5-over 75 and 4-over 74, Gunson's fired a 2-under 68 in the final round- the lowest score a Gaucho has recorded the entire spring season.

UC Davis' Austin Graham took medalist honors with a 6-under 204. Morien Madsen of Oregon State finished one stroke back at 5-under. Roger Sloan of UTEP and Nate Pistacchio of UC Davis finished at 4-under.

The last tournament of the season will be the Big West Championship on April 20th and 21st at San Luis Obispo Country Club in San Luis Obispo. The team will play three rounds over the two days.
