Solid Third Round Gives Gauchos Fifth-Place Finish at Lexus Classic
March 8, 2011
FRESNO, Calif. -
Glen Scher carded 1-under par 71 in the final round to finish at 5-over par 221 and help the UC Santa Barbara golf team to a fifth-place finish at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. The tournament was played at the Sunnyside Country Club.
The fifth-place finish was the second top-10 finish in a row for Santa Barbara. In its last tournament, the Gauchos finished fourth at the Wyoming Desert Classic.
The 71 was Scher's best round of the tournament and it helped bump the Gauchos from sixth to fifth. UCSB was in second after the first round when it shot 370, but the team struggled through a windy second round and shot 381. Scher's 221 was good enough to tie him with several other players for 16th-place in the individual standings.
Andrew Gunson, who had Santa Barbara's best score after the first and second rounds, finished in a tie for 27th at 7-over par 223. His even-par72 helped the Gauchos to second-place after one round.
San Diego State dominated the field. The Aztecs jumped out to a 4-shot lead after one round and never looked back. As a team, they shot a 3-over par 1,083, 26 shots better than second-place Pacific which went to the clubhouse on Tuesday at 29-over par. Duke was third at 30-over par, UC Irvine was fourth at 36-over par and then it was UCSB at 40-over par. The host Fresno State tied BYU and New Mexico at 43-over par to finish sixth.
Alex Johnson of Pacific made a 20-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole to win the individual title over Bryan Harris of UC Irvine. The two players entered the playoff at 6-under par, 210.
The Gauchos return to action at the Folino Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, at the Oak Greek Golf Course on March 21-22.
