Beaumont, Calif. - In only their second tournament of the Spring Season, the UC Santa Barbara golf team recorded a 33-over par 897 at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif., finishing ninth out of 13 schools in the Braveheart Classic hosted by UC Riverside.
The University of Oregon won the tournament, posting an 11-over par 875. Southern Utah was second at 882, 18-over par. Southern Utah's Nate Page was the lone player in the field to finish in red numbers on the weekend, shooting a 69 on the final day to finish with a 215, one shot under par.
Tyler Weir finished in seventh place overall with a 2-over par 218 to lead UCSB. After finishing the first round at 4-over, Weir carded the Gauchos' lone below-par round of the tournament in the second with a 2-under 70. Andrew Gunson tied for 31st with a three-round total of 225.
Brian Hollenbeck, who led the Gauchos in scoring average coming into the tournament, posted final rounds of 76 and 77 on his way to 42nd place tie at 225. Hollenbeck led the tournament in pars, tallying 43.
After a first round 301, the Gauchos finished six shots better in the second thanks in large part to Weir's 70 and a 1-over 73 by Gunson. However, the Gauchos were unable to keep that momentum going, relapsing with a final round 301.
Oak Valley Golf Club played extremely difficult on the weekend. The field mustered just a 76.87 scoring average on the weekend, nearly four strokes over par. UC Santa Barbara ranked third in total pars on the weekend with 164.
UCSB returns to the links for competition Mar. 9 and Mar. 10 when it will play in the Fresno State Lexus Classic. The event will be hosted by Fresno State and take place at Belmont Country Club in Fresno, Calif.
