Gauchos Resume Tournament Play with 13th-Place Finish at John Burns Intercoilegiate

HONOLULU - The UC Santa Barbara golf team played its first winter tournament in the 2008-09 season at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii, and finished 13th out of 17 schools by recording a 10-over par 874.

The tournament, one of the toughest in the nation, was won by Texas A&M, which finished at 28-under par 836. New Mexico was second at 839, 25-under par.

Matt Grush, a junior, was the Gauchos' top finisher. Grush shot a 2-over par 218 to lead UCSB. Andrew Gunson and Tyler Sterk each recorded a 3-over par 219.

Santa Barbara was solid early, logging a 285 and 291 in the first two rounds, but the third and final round the Gauchos tallied a 298, moving them into 13th-place out of 17 schools.

UCSB returns to action on March 2, 2009, at the Bravehearrt Classic,hosted by UC Riverside at the Oak Valley Golf course in Beaumont, Calif.
