Gauchos Rally to Tie Northridge for Third at Anteater Invitational

COSTA MESA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara shot a third round 287 to pick-up five shots and tie Cal State Northridge for third-place at the Anteater Invitational at Mesa Verde Country Club Tuesday. The host school, UC Irvine, won the tourney in a one-hole playoff against Santa Clara.

The Gauchos trailed the Matadors by one shot after Monday's first round and by five after the second round. Led by Brian Hollenbeck and Andrew Gunson, who each shot even-par 71s in the third round, UCSB pulled even at the end.

Glen Scher shot a 1-over par 214 to tie for 10th, leading all UCSB players. Hollenbeck shot a 2-over par 215 tying for 12th, while Gunson recorded a 3-over par 216 that tied him for 14th-place. Russell Boring and Tyler Weir each carded 5-over par 219 to tie for 25th.

The Anteaters entered the third round trailing Santa Clara by 14 shots, but fired a final round of 280 to tie the Broncos who shot a 294 Tuesday for first place with a three-round total of 848. All five players participated in the play-off hole with the top four players scoring as UC Irvine captured the title shooting a two-over (14) while Santa Clara carded a five-over (17) on the 18th hole.

UC Irvine senior John Chin won medalist honors with an 11-under par 202 (66-65-71). Cal State Northridge's Nick Delio finished second at 206 (69-67-70) and Loyola Marymount's Jake Sarnoff had the low round of the day firing a 65 to move into third place at 208 (72-71-65).

UCSB returns to action at the USD Farms Invitational at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., on Feb. 8-9.
