Smith Leads Big West Championship Tournament, UCSB in 5th After 2 Rounds

LIHUE, Hawaii – UC Santa Barbara senior Zach Smith shot a 2-under par 142 through the first two rounds of the 2019 Big West Men's Golf Championship and will carry a 1-shot lead into the Tuesday's final round as he seeks the league's individual medalist honor. 

Smith carded a 4-under 68 in the first round at the Wailua Golf Course and then was 2-over in the second round. He leads the tournament by one shot over Matt Gunson of UC Irvine and Matt Wilson of Cal State Fullerton. 

As a team, the Gauchos are in fifth-place, five shots back of fourth-place Fullerton, six back of third-place UC Davis, eight behind Long Beach State and 11 off the pace set by UC Irvine. 

Brett Bennett will enter Tuesday's third round tied for 18th at 6-over par. Bennett had one of the tournament highlights when he had a hole-in-one on the par 3, 168 yard 14th hole. He and Smith are the only two UCSB players in the top-20 after two rounds.

Brandon Jacobs is in 25th-place with an 8-over par 152 while Brandon Bueno and Justin Sheparovich are tied for 26th with 9-over par 153s.

The final round of the tournament will tee-off at 8am in Hawai'i, or 11am Pacific Daylight Time.
