CHANDLER, Ariz. - UC Santa Barbara shot a 10-over par 298 in the third and final round to finish with a three-round score of 16-over par 880 and a 14th-place finish at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. The tournament was held at the Whirlwind Golf Club.
Zach Smith carded a 4-over par 220 to lead all Gaucho finishers, tying for 56th-place. A trio of UCSB players - Brett Bennett, Tyler See and Justin Sheparovich - each shot 6-over par 222s, tying for 65th-place in the 118-player field. Brandon Jacobs narrowly missed making the threesome a foursome as he finished with a 7-over par 223, tying for 72nd-place.
Smith, a two-time Big West Golfer of the Month in 2018-19, entered the final round of the tournament at even-par, but he could only muster a 4-over 76 on Tuesday to settle for his 220. His best round of the tournament was a 1-under 71 in Monday's first round. The best round by any Gaucho was Brandon Jacobs' 2-under 70 in the second round.
UCLA, the 39th-ranked team in the nation, settled for a comfortable seven-shot win over Cal State Fullerton. The Bruins finished with a 23-under par 841 while the Titans carded a 16-under 848. Grand Canyon (-14), Wyoming (-10) and Santa Clara (-8) rounded out the top-five.
UCLA's Cole Madey and Wyoming's John Murdock deadlocked for the individual medalist honor at 13-under par, 203. Northern Colorado's Joshua Matz and Grand Canyon's Jake Chanen each finished at -9 to tie for third, while UCLA's Jack Ireland (-8) fifth.
The Gauchos will return to action when they host the UCSB Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, April 15-16 at Sandpiper Golf Course on the Santa Barbara Coast. The tournament will be a play-six-count-four format. There will be 36 holes played on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
