SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara senior Zach Smith (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley HS) notched his third career Big West Men's Golfer of the Month honor as he shot par or better in all nine rounds he competed in for the month of October.
Smith shot below par in all three tournaments – Nick Watney Invitational, Bill Cullum Invitational and Visit Stockton Invitational. The Gauchos finished third overall as a team in the first two tournaments and completed competition with a seventh place showing at the Visit Stockton Invitational.
"Zach played really well and really consistently in the fall," said UCSB head coach Steve Lass. "He's a senior now and he's playing with a lot of confidence."
Smith recorded three rounds of 69 during the month – the first round of the Nick Watney and the first two of the Bill Cullum. He shot no worse than 72 in any of the nine rounds.
He finished in a tie for 12th with a 4-under 212 (69-71-72) at the Nick Watney.
His best finish came at the Bill Cullum Invite when he carded an 8-under 208, concluding the tourney with a 70 following the two 69's. Smith was either in the lead or tied for it much of the final day, eventually settling for a second place tie with UCLA's Bryan Wiyang Teoh.
Smith's 2-under 211 (70-70-71) secured a tie for 21st place overall at the Visit Stockton Invitational.
Smith averaged 70.11 over nine rounds of competition.
