STOCKTON, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara golf team completed its fall portion of the schedule with a seventh-place finish at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at the Stockton Country Club on Saturday. The Gauchos finished 7-under par, three shots out of sixth-place.
UCSB was led by junior Brett Bennett who tied for fifth-place among individuals with an 8-under par 205. Bennett entered Saturday's final round tied for 10th-place, but a 4-under 67 moved him up five spots where he tied with Soren Lind of San Francisco. Senior Zach Smith was the Gauchos' next highest finisher, carding a 2-under 211 to tie for 21st-place.
Nevada won the team competition with a 38-under par 814. The Wolf Pack came from two shots behind Brigham Young to jump from second to first in the final round. BYU finished 12 shot off the pace at -26. San Francisco was third at 24-under, while Long Beach State (-17), St. Mary's (-14) and San Jose State (-10) were third through sixth respectively.
BYU's Peter Kuest earned individual medalist honors with a 16-under 197. Nevada's Joey Vrzich was second at 12-under, setting a course record of 10-under par in the final round. Sam Harned (-11) of Nevada and Joey Fryer (-10) of Long Beach State were third and fourth.
The Gauchos resume play on Feb. 11-12 when they travel to the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational at the Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif.
