Gauchos Close Strong to Finish Tied for 5th at Del Walker Intercollegiate

LONG BEACH, Calif. - After dropping to 15th-place during Monday's second round, the UC Santa Barbara golf team rebounded to finish that round strong on Tuesday and then post a solid third round en route to tying Long Beach State for fifth-place at the Del Walker Intercollegiate played at the Virginia Country Club.

The second round was suspended due to darkness on Monday so the Gauchos had to finish the final several holes on Tuesday morning and by the end they had climbed from 15th-place into a tie with Cal State Northridge for ninth-place. They continued their strong play by shooting a 290 in the third round to move up three more spots.

Junior Zach Smith bounced back from a 6-over par first round with an eve-par second round a a 1-over par final round to finish with a 7-over 217. Smith tied with junior teammate Brandon Bauman for 17th-place in the tournament. Bauman carded a 1-under par first round, a 3-over second round and a 5-over final round for his 217.

Willy Moffly shot a 3-over par 73 to finish at 12-over for the tournament, tying for 37th-place with a 222 total. Brett Bennett tied for 57th with a 16-over par 226, but he was instrumental in the third-round ascension by the Gauchos with a 1-over par 71. Brett Patton tied for 72nd at 21-over par.

Boise State claimed the team title by four shots ahead Cal Poly, 10 ahead of Pacific and 15 on top of Cal State Northridge. The Broncos' Brian Humphreys shot a 1-under par 209 to claim the individual medalist honors over his teammate Mason Schulze as well as Fidel Concepcion of Southern Utah and Riley Elmes of Loyola Marymount.

UCSB will next compete when it travels to the Sacramento Invitational on March 6-7 at the Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove, Calif.
