PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara shot a 45-over par 897 to finish ninth out of 14 teams at the Saint Mary's Invitational played at the Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach. Sophomore Nick Swanson recorded a solid 5-over par 218 to finish tied for ninth.
There were plenty of high scores on the par-71 Poppy Hills course with 12 of the 14 teams in the tournament finishing 29-over or higher. The Gauchos shot 14-over par in Monday's first round, 16-over in Tuesday's second round and 15-over in Wednesday's final round.
San Diego State finished first while the host school, Saint Mary's College was second.
Swanson shot an even-par 71 to jump seven spots - from 16th to ninth - in the final round. He was 3-over in the first round and 2-over in the second round.
Brandon Bauman finished with a 10-over par 223 to tie for 24th. Matt Moomjian was 17-over to tie for 56th and Willy Moffly was 27-over to finish 79th. Zach Smith, who shot 9-over par through two rounds, withdrew from the tournament and did not compete in the third and final round.
The individual medalist was Eduardo Carrete of St. Mary's who shot a 3-under par 21, one shot better than San Diego State's P.J. Samiere, two ahead of Arizona's George Cunningham, three up on San Diego State's Gunn Yang, and four ahead of San Francisco's Tim Widing.
UCSB will play its final fall tournament on Nov. 4-6 when it travels to the Ka'anapali Classic at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course in Lahaina on the island of Maui
