Gauchos Roll to 14-Shot Lead After 2 Rounds of Bill Cullum Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - A trio of UC Santa Barbara players finished the second round in the top eight at the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Course, leading the Gauchos to a 22-under par 554 and atop the standings, 14 shots ahead of the second-place team, UC Irvine. 

Santa Barbara shot a 279 in the first round to lead Loyola Marymount (286) by seven shots, but the by the end of the second round the advantage exploded to 14. 

Junior Willy Moffly is at 9-under par after two rounds. After shooting a 3-under par 69 through the first 18, he carded a 6-under par 66 during the second 18 to pull himself within one shot of individual leader Johan Texeira of USC who is at 10-under par after two rounds.

Brandon Bauman, the reigning Big West Player of the Year, struggled through a 1-over par first round on Monday but then recorded the best round of the tournament, an 8-under par 64 in the second round, to pull into fourth-place.

Fidel Concepcion of Southern Utah is tied with Moffly for second in the individual standings. 

UCSB sophomore Nick Swanson, who was second after the first round at 5-under par, carded a 1-over par in the second round, and stands tied for eithth at 4-under par after two rounds. Freshman Matt Moomjian is tied for 33rd at 1-over par and tied for 33rd and junior Zach Smith, meanwhile, is tied for 39th at 2-over par for the Gauchos.

The final 18 holes will be played beginning Tuesday morning at 8:00 am.
