FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Zach Smith finished with a 2-over par 215 and UC Santa Barbara shot a team score of 888 to finish in 11th-place at thet Nick Watney Invitational at the San Joaquin Country Club on Tuesday. The tournament was the first of the season for the Gauchos.
Smith carded a 2-under par 69 in Tuesday's final round to move into the top-15. He entered the day at 4-over par after the first two rounds of the tournament on Monday.
Brandon Bauman, the defending Big West Player of the Year, was UCSB's second highest finisher as he carded an 8-over par 221, including a 1-under par 70 in the final round to finish tied for 31st. Rounding out the Gaucho five were Willy Moffly who shot a 13-over par 226 to tie for 57th, Matt Moomjian who shot a 14-over par 227 and Nick Swanson who was at 10-over par after two rounds before withdrawing from the final round.
BYU won the team competition with a 1-over par 853, two shots ahead of Nevada and St. Mary's which each finished 3-over par. The indivivdual medalist was Perry Cohen from St. Mary's who finished with a 5-under par 208. Justin De Los Santos of Cal Poly was second, one shot back.
UCSB returns to action on Oct. 17-18 when it plays at the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Course in Simi Valley, Calif.
