Freshmen Lead Gauchos at Wyoming Cowboy Classic

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Freshmen Zach Smith and Brandon Bauman each finished below par to lead the UC Santa Barbara golf team to a 15th-place finish at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Tuesday. The tournament was played at the Whirlwind Golf Course.

Smith shot a 3-under par 69 in Tuesday's third round to finish at 3-under par 213 for the tournament, tying for 22nd-place. Bauman tied for 28th, one-shot back with a 1-under par 214. As a team, the Gauchos finished 11-over par with an 875, five shots behind Wyoming, seven back of Utah State and nine behind Long Beach State.

Will Strauss carded a 7-over par 223 to finish in a tie for 74th-place. Another freshman, Willy Moffly, was 9-over par at 225, tying for 79th.

McNeese State won the team title with a 26-under par 838, two shots better than Idah and four ahead of Colorado.

Jared du Toit of Idaho, Robert MacIntyre of McNeese State and Devon Purser of Weber State tied for the individual medalist honors at 9-under par, 207. Purser won the playoff with MacIntyre finishing second and du Toit third.

UCSB returns to action on April 13-14 when it hosts the OGIO-UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate at Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara.
