PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii - Zach Smith shot a 4-under par 212 as the UC Santa Barbara golf team completed the fall portion of its schedule with a 12th-place finish at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii.
Smith carded an at-par 72 in the Monday's first round, but he was 2-under break-even in the second and rounds to finish in a tie for 24th-place. Will Strauss was the next Gaucho player, finishing at even-par 216 and tying for 42nd.
As a team, the Gauchos finished 8-over par, four shots ahead of Utah, 11 ahead of San Francisco and 12 ahead of Hawaii.
Powerful Georgia Tech won the tournament, leading wire-to-wire and finishing a 55-under par 809. Arizona State was second, 15 shots back, at 40-under par 824, while Louisville rounded out the top-three at 38-undere par 826.
Pepperdine's Frederick Wedel shot a sparkling 20-under par 196 to win the individual title, three shots in front of San Diego's Grant Forrest and Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans who each carded 17-under 199s. In all, 39 players finished under par for the tournament.
The Gauchos will be off until resuming play during the winter-spring portion of their schedule. They will return to action on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 9-10 at the Barona College Cup, played at the Barona Golf Course in Lakeside, Calif.
