Gauchos Play Solid Final Round, Finish Third in First Tournament of Season

MARICOPA, Ariz. - UC Santa Barbara shot a final round 291 to break a tie for third-place with the host University of Wyoming and Nebraska on Sunday in the final round of the Cowboy Southern Dunes Tournament at Southern Dunes Golf Course in Maricopa, Ariz.

The third-place finish for the Gauchos was particularly solid as they used several new players in the opening tournament of the season.

One of the new players, freshman Zach Smith, tied for the lowest final round at 3-under par, to finish at 2-under for the tournament, tying for fifth-place. Will Strauss shot even-par in the final round to end the tournament at 5-under par, 221, tying for 16th overall.

Hunter Robinson also carded an even-par 72 to finish at 6-over and tie for 19th-place.

Mike Smith (12-over par, 228) and Brandon Bauman (14-over par, 230) tied for 30th and 35th-place respectively. 

The University of Idaho won the team title easily. The Vandals finished 10-under par, 17 shots ahead of second-place San Francisco. The Gauchos were 25 shots back while UC Irvine and Wyoming tied for fourth, 34 off the pace.

Idaho's Jared du Toit won the individual honors shooting a 206, 10-under par, one shot ahead of Arizona State's Mathias Schjoelberg who was playing as an individual UC Irvine's Peter Fernandez was third a 4-under par 212.

UCSB returns to action on Monday, Oct. 20 when it travels to the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Country Club in Simi Valley, Calif.
