IRVINE, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara sophomore guard James Powell was named Big West co-Player of the Week after helping the Gauchos to wins over UNLV and Loyola Marymount last week.
Powell scored 15 points, all in the second half, as the Gauchos came from behind to defeat UNLV, 63-60 on Nov. 27. It was his three-pointer with less than half a second remaining that broke a 60-60 tie and gave his team the win. The three-pointer was his fifth of the game, a career-high.
On Saturday, Powell had 11 points to go along with season-highs of six rebounds and five assists, as UCSB defeated Loyola Marymount, 63-56.
The honor was the first ever for Powell. He is the second Gaucho to win the award this season, joining Alex Harris who earned the honor last week.
Cal State Northridge forward Tremaine Townsend was the other honoree.
