James Powell Awarded First Gino Filippin Scholarship Winner

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara freshman men's basketball player James Powell has been named the first recipient of the Gino Filippin Memorial Scholarship, it was announced Tuesday.
Filippin, a longtime Santa Barbara area resident and friend of UCSB Athletics and the local sports community in general, passed away on April 14, 2006.
Powell, who redshirted the 2005-06 season with the Gauchos, is expected to be the team's starting point guard in 2006-07. He is a native of Pomona, Calif., and a graduate of Glendora High School.
"I am greatly honored to have been selected for this scholarship," Powell said. "Mr. Filippin meant a great deal to UCSB Athletics and to many others and this is a very special privilege for me."
Filippin was born in Goleta in 1931 and graduated from Santa Barbara High School before enlisting in the Air Force. He returned to his hometown in the mid-1950's and founded Gino Filippin Masonry Construction, Inc., helping build many of the commercial buildings in Santa Barbara.
Filippn played baseball at SBHS, Santa Barbara City College and with the semipro Santa Barbara Foresters, developing a passion for the sport that would last a lifetime. He played a major role in the construction and maintenance of Caesar Uyesaka Stadium at UCSB, as well as numerous other athletic facilities on campus. An avid Gaucho fan, Filippin attended many events in many sports and offered support in any way he could.
