SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara center Greg Somogyi, a freshman in 2008-09, will represent his native Hungary at the 20-and-under European Championships in Macedonia, head coach Bob Williams announced Tuesday.
"This will be a great experience for Greg," Williams said. "He has had a tremendous spring in terms of commitment in the weight room and working harder. His work ethic has come up substantially."
As a freshman, the 7-foot-2 Somogyi averaged 3.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. He also led the team in blocked shots with 37, just two shy of the school record for a freshman. In a Dec. 20 game at San Diego State, the native of Budapest established a new freshman record with five blocks. He also shot 54.8% from the field.
In the past, Somgyi was a member of Hungary's Junior National Team. Williams expects that his experience during the summer of 2009 will really benefit him.
"Any time you have the chance to play with and against top-notch players representing their country you will benefit," Williams predicted. "Greg has so much upside and every opportunity like this will help him realize that upside."
Somogyi will leave for Budapest this week to prepare for the games.
