June 6, 2000

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Road games at UCLA, BYU and Pepperdine and home games against USC, USF, San Diego State and Westmont College, highlight the 2000-2001 UC Santa Barbara men's basketball schedule.

The Gauchos will open the regular season on Sunday, November 19, when they travel to Malibu to take on Pepperdine. The Waves advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament this past season and they will be one of three non-conference opponents which advanced to the postseason in 2000.

Following the opener at Pepperdine, the Gauchos will return home to host the University of San Francisco on Tuesday, November 21. Following the Thunderdome opener against USF, UCSB will hit the road for difficult back-to-back road games against teams that appeared in the postseason last year. On Saturday, November 25, they travel to BYU. The Cougars advanced to the third round of the National Invitation Tournament last season. On Wednesday, November 29, the Gauchos will play at UCLA, which advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2000. The game between the Gauchos and Bruins will be the first since the 1979-80 campaign.

After the back-to-back road games, UCSB will return home for three games in succession. They will play on December 2 at home against cross-town opponent Westmont College. On Wednesday, December 6 they play host to San Diego State and then on Saturday, December 9 they will host USC.

Following their December 9 game against the Trojans, UCSB will take several days off before returning to the hardwood for a December 22 road game at St. Mary's. The Gauchos will play their final non-conference road game on Wednesday, December 27 when they travel to UC Riverside. The game against the Highlanders will be the first of two between the schools on the season. UC Riverside will join the Big West Conference for the 2001-2002 season.

The Gauchos play their final tune-up prior to Big West competition on Saturday, December 30 when they host Loyola Marymount.

In 2000-2001, the Big West Conference will return to double-round robin competition. For the first time in five seasons, there will not be divisional play. Each team will play a home-and-home set. UCSB will open league play at home on January 4 against Boise State.

The Gauchos will play their second game of the season, a home contest, against UC Riverside on Saturday, February 17.

"I am very excited about our schedule for next year," said UCSB head coach Bob Williams. "I think it is good for us to play as many games as possible against the PAC Ten and Mountain West Conferences. I also like to keep some of our natural rivalries against West Coast Conference schools going. All-in-all, I think we have a very good schedule."

The 2000-2001 season will be the final one for Boise State in Big West play. Following next year, the Broncos will move to the Western Athletic Conference. The Big West will then welcome in UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge.
