INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - UC Santa Barbara sophomore Orlando Johnson was named to the CollegeInsiders.com/Lou Henson Mid-Major All-American Team, it was announced Friday. Johnson was one of just two underclassmen named to the team.
Johnson led UCSB to a 20-10 overall record. He was selected the Big West Player of the Year, First Team All-Big West, Big West All-Tournament, and Big West Tournament MVP. He averaged 18.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in his first year as a Gaucho.
A transfer from Loyola Marymount, Johnson scored 540 points in his sophomore campaign, the sixth most in school history. He made numerous key shots and guided the team to its first Big West Tournament title since 2002. In an NCAA Tournament game against Ohio State, he scored 20 points.
"Orlando is so deserving of this honor," said Gaucho head coach Bob Williams. "He works so hard and is such a great part of this program. I am so happy for him."
The only other underclassman named to the team was Butler guard Shelvin Mack who is playing in the NCAA's Final Four.
